This course is a collaborative venture between Teesside University and senior clinician and healthcare professionals. It is designed for science graduates and healthcare professionals who wish to develop advanced skills in the management of patients with active implantable medical devices. You will develop knowledge and skills relating to the function and technology of active implantable devices as well as the requirements of a monitoring and management service.

What you study

Core modules focus on evidence-based practice and research. Specialist modules address the science and technology of the devices and relevant physiology and pathology. You'll also cover the therapeutic role of these devices and the management of a monitoring service. The course is delivered entirely online except for a one-day induction at the University and six days' attendance at a specialist clinical centre.

How you learn

This course is delivered online following an induction at the University. The e-learning incorporates the use of Blackboard to deliver learning materials (including presentations, lectures and podcasts) and to communicate with you. Tutorial support is available and encouraged for all modules. Blogs and Wikis are used to facilitate group discussion. Clinical mentors are allocated for all students to provide support from experts within practice. You are also encouraged to attend six days of facilitated placement at another device implanting centre to extend your experience, skills and theoretical knowledge.

How you are assessed

You will be assessed formatively using an e-portfolio (in some modules) and summatively using written assignments, case studies and examinations.

Career opportunities

Completing this course will help you prepare to take responsibility for monitoring and managing patients with active implantable devices (cardiac devices initially).

Entry requirements

Applicants should have an honours degree (2.2 classification or above) in a science subject, some relevant clinical experience is also required. Applicants with other relevant experience will be considered.
