Any sports professional whose career is not blighted by some kind of injury is extremely fortunate. A sports therapy degree is concerned with preventing and rehabilitating injuries to ensure that athletes spend more time on the pitch than on the treatment table.

You learn essential skills in collecting, interpreting and reporting the fitness data you acquire in specialist sports laboratories, and probe the psychological factors which can affect an athlete’s performance.

Practical sports therapy techniques are an integral part of your studies, which are honed in our multimillion-pound sports complex that includes a hydrotherapy pool and environmental chamber.

Placement in a sports injury environment exposes you to the complexities of real clinical situations, where you put techniques such as soft tissue massage and vertebral mobilisation into practice, often with Teesside University sports teams.

How you learn

This multidisciplinary degree uses a wide range of learning and teaching methods including clinical-based practical sessions, laboratory work, lectures, seminars, group work and placements. You will also have the opportunity to take part in offering University teams a first-aid service at matches, competitions and events. Practice experience is an integral component of this degree programme. In Year 3 you will be put in the sports injury environment, where you will meet the complexities of real clinical situations. You will have to retrieve and synthesise material previously learned in the University setting and integrate it with new information gathered in relation to the patient.

How you are assessed

You will be assessed by a combination of written and practical assessments. You will also be required to produce a dissertation in your final year of study.

Professional placement

The Clinical Placement module provides the opportunity to gain valuable experience working in a clinical and sporting environment both within the University sports injury clinics and a wide range of external clinics, sports clubs and rehabilitation centres across the North East.

Professional accreditation

This course is formally recognised by the Society of Sports Therapists.
