More information

This innovative programme has been designed specifically for people involved in the delivery of subject content in a wide range of settings: from those teaching in formal or informal education in mainstream, further or higher education; those providing oversight or delivery of training in different economic sectors; and those with a personal career or interest involving digital technology. This degree is ideal for you if you want to learn about, gain insight into and acquire a qualification in how and where different kinds of digital technology can best be applied in situations involving learning, teaching or training.

The degree has been jointly developed between the education and computing departments across the Schools of Social Sciences & Law and the School of Computing and is taught by experts in educational practice, the digital arts and learning technology subject areas.

What you study

The MSc has a full-time and a part-time route. Both have taught sessions which are scheduled to enable working professionals to attend.

The programme will provide you with opportunities to develop appropriate specialist skills and explore a range of issues relating to the effective application of digital technology for learning; develop insight into how this can inform your professional work; and relate this to learning and teaching. This is an opportunity for you to develop your own pedagogical awareness and practice, gain knowledge and confidence in applying digital technology and a qualification to help you move forward in your career.

The emphasis throughout is on reflective practice and the application of your studies to your professional context.

How you learn

The programme will be delivered through a range of keynote lectures, seminars, guest speakers, individual and group-based practical exercises, immersive and online experiences, self-directed study and formal face-to-face presentations and demonstrations. It will make use of case studies, problem-based learning and scenarios. You will engage with authentic research projects through practical elements centred around specific case studies.

All modules will be supported by Blackboard although the internet as well as the Library will be extensively used for research.

You will be expected to engage with the programme for significant amounts of time outside of class time, either on individual research and assignment work, collaboratively within virtual learning environments or face to face at mutually-agreed meetings to complete group-based activities. Research-informed teaching and enquiry-based learning will be used extensively. You will be supported by a personal tutor and (for the dissertation) an additional supervisor.

How you are assessed

Assessment is by written assignments, portfolios or project reports of 5-6,000 words for each module and of 15-20,000 words for the dissertation.

Career opportunities

Graduates should be well prepared for a wide range of employment opportunities in the field of teaching, training or the leadership of learning, teaching and training within their professional context.
