Advice & Guidance

A careers adviser can help you whatever stage you are at in the career planning process. You may know what you want to do and need help planning how to achieve it, or you might have just started thinking about your career and need some direction and encouragement.

We are happy to help you with CVs and application forms, but we do not provide a CV writing service and cannot spend time correcting your spelling and grammar.

About your careers appointment

What is a careers interview?
It is an informal and impartial discussion with a careers adviser. We are here to help you, so you tell us what you want to talk about.

How can an interview help you?

  • Improve your CV and applications
  • Improve your job interview performance
  • Develop and discuss career options and ideas
  • Plan how to put your career ideas into practice

Don't worry if you have no definite career plans. We can help you make some.

Should I bring anything to the interview?
If you wish to discuss job applications you could bring your CV or copies of applications you have submitted along with examples of the type of jobs you are applying for.

After your interview

  • If you have further quick queries come to a drop-in session, held most days
  • You are welcome to book further appointments if you think this will be productive

If you are unable to attend please let us know so that someone else can have your appointment.

Queries (advice by email)

Advice by email is ideal if you can't come into the Careers Service or you have a simple question that doesn't need discussion between you and the adviser. We promise to reply to your question within five days but will usually respond quicker. If we feel that your enquiry is too complex for this service we may ask you to see an adviser in person.

Anything you tell us and any advice we give will only be discussed with other people if you have given your permission. Your careers adviser may ask to discuss your case with colleagues to ensure you receive the best possible advice.
