Frequently asked questions
What happens in careers service events?
Each session has a different format but may include a presentation by Careers Service staff or an external speaker, practical exercises such as analysing CVs or application questions and a video and follow-up exercises. You’ll always get the chance to ask questions.
We conduct our psychometric testing sessions under formal exam conditions to give you the most realistic experience.
What to expect - employer and careers presentation outlines
Why are there separate presentations for non-UK students?
Many EU and international students don't have a good knowledge of the UK employment market. Our non-UK presentations have the same content as our standard sessions but are longer to allow us to include additional introductory information and extra time for your questions.
Why are most presentations on Wednesday afternoons at 1.00pm?
Most of you don't have lectures after 1.00pm on Wednesdays and so are free to take part in other activities. We do hold our regular sessions (CVs, Application Forms and Interviews) on other days but one-off and external presentations are on Wednesdays to allow as many of you as possible to attend.
What if I can't make Wednesdays due to other commitments?
If you can get a small group of students together we will be happy to put on an event at a time that suits you. Or you could ask your tutor to approach us to arrange a session for your whole group.
Why do you ask me to sign up?
It helps to know how many people will attend so we can arrange enough handouts and seating. For psychometric tests you MUST sign up so you have the chance to complete the practice questions in advance.
Can I pick up the handouts if I can't attend?
View the 'Careers' organisation to access information from recent careers and employer presentations.
No – all our supporting teaching materials are made available through the careers organisation on E-learning@Tees. However, there is plenty of other information in the careers service on all our presentation topics. Come in and ask our reception staff.
How long are the sessions?
Most are 90 minutes or two hours to allow time for practical exercises as well as information. Psychometric testing sessions last up to two-and-a-half hours for the full set of three tests.
If I go to a CV session will I come away with a completed CV?
No. We give you guidelines and examples. You can get individual help from our advisers afterwards. Come to one of our daily drop-in sessions or make an appointment to see an adviser.
Are the presentations tailored towards specific job or subject areas?
The content of the sessions should be applicable to all courses. However we do use examples from a range of different subjects to illustrate how you can make the most of your experience. We also offer one-to-one interviews or you could ask your tutor to arrange a tailored session for your course.
