Student retention

Student retention is a key concern for many universities – we need to provide our students with the best opportunity to succeed within the context of widening participation. A student’s move into higher education, as well the changes that take place during their studies, are ‘critical moments’ in their learning experience.

As the retention team we explore strategies to enhance students’ learning experience from the first year onwards. Our work has been highlighted as an example of good practice by the National Audit Office

The rate of students not completing courses in UK higher education is around 17%. Possible reasons for this include academic failure, choosing the wrong course, personal problems, lack of student support and increasing class sizes.
