Emma Surrey
Emma Surrey volunteered for Sports Universities North East England and now has a job as Assistant Sports Development Officer for Hartlepool Council.
BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy
My volunteering journey started when I helped organise and deliver TOP Link, which is a sports conference for higher education students to develop their skills in sports development.
I expanded my volunteering experience with various activities for Sports Universities North East England activities, including coaching, event management, and marketing.
This not only gave me invaluable experience and developed my skills and confidence, but also gave me a chance to taste different areas of sport development.
I also developed contacts and networking opportunities with potential employers.
My volunteering experiences complemented my degree in sports therapy by enabling me to relate academic theory to practice. It also gave me valuable real life work experience which employers are looking for.
The job market for sport graduates is becoming increasingly competitive and I feel that by volunteering and gaining experience, contacts and skills, it made me stand out for all the right reasons in my job interview.
