Frequently asked questions
Q: What should I do to get immunised?
A: Make an appointment with your doctor before you go to university, explaining you want the meningitis vaccine. You might need to give a week’s notice, so don’t leave it until the last minute.
Q: What if I haven’t had the vaccine before going to university?
A: If you arrive at university without being immunised, register with a doctor and ask for the vaccine. If you have any difficulty getting immunised, contact Student Services in the Student Centre or call on 01642 342277.
Q: What protection does the vaccine give students?
A: The vaccine gives protection against meningococcal Group C disease. It doesn't give protection against infection from other groups of meningococcal disease such as Group B.
Q: Will the vaccine make students immune to meningitis?
A: No, the vaccine doesn’t give protection against other forms of meningitis. One injection of the vaccine should provide protection against Group C for life. It is not effective against Group B of the disease which accounts for about 60% of all cases. Everyone still has to be aware of the signs and symptoms of meningitis.
