Computer Science for Teachers with Python Programming

This part time course is primarily for teachers who need the knowledge and confidence to teach computing and computer science at GCSE level.

This course covers the following:

Foundation computer science topics

  • Binary and hexadecimal
  • Truth tables and logic gates
  • The structure of the processor
  • Hardware
  • Representations of data
  • Networking and internet
  • The GCSE controlled assessment task.

Programming topics using Python:

  • Variables
  • Types and casts
  • Sequence
  • Selection
  • Iteration
  • Lists
  • Parameters and return values
  • File handling
  • Writing functions
  • Introduction to databases
  • Debugging.

Each of the ten sessions are split into Computer Science Foundation and Python programming. All the technology and software required to complete the course is provided. You may wish to bring your own USB stick to take copies of your code away with you to continue your training at home.

Entry requirements

Delegates will not require previous computer programming or computer science experience to take part in this course.

The course is primarily aimed at teachers who are currently teaching ICT at GCSE and wish to increase their confidence and knowledge to teach computing/computer science GCSEs. However, you don’t have to be a teacher to take part, you may just have an interest in computer science and would like a more robust grounding or perhaps you are considering teaching in the future and understand that the entry requirements for the computer disciplines has changed.
