This module provides a supportive learning environment for those who wish to extend their understanding of qualitative data analysis and learn how to use the qualitative data analysis software NVivo. The course encourages you to engage critically with the theory and practice of data analysis, and explore different data analysis techniques.

It introduces you to NVivo software and helps you develop your skills through completing your own project, which can be based on your own data or upon data provided by your tutor. NVivo is capable of handling a wide range of qualitative data including interviews, other written material, photographs and videos.

What you study

You study the different techniques people use to analyse qualitative data and how these tie into different epistemological and theoretical positions. You actively carry out data analysis and learn how to use NVivo in order to pursue different data analysis strategies.

How you learn and are assessed

You learn through seminars, mini-lectures, reading, computer-based workshops, by doing presentations and analysing data. You are assessed through a presentation and a written evaluation of the NVivo project which you do in the workshop sessions.

Career opportunities

This UCPPD enhances the CV of social researchers working in a variety of organisational settings including academia, the public sector and the private sector. Previous students on this module have worked in many settings including academia, health, clinical psychology, local government, education and social work settings.

Entry requirements

You should meet MSc level admissions criteria but must also have some experience of collecting and analysing qualitative data.
