Further information

This Level 6 award is for registered nurses and care practitioners who work in a health or social care environment with older people. You explore how practitioners can use personal effectiveness to demonstrate excellent service provision for older people.

You integrate and apply theories and concepts in contemporary health and social care to enhance person-centred care. The needs of older people are considered as a client group as well as individual service users. You evaluate issues around the appropriate care for service users and their carers.

You study how to:

  • articulate and challenge contemporary approaches to caring for older people through critically evaluating existing theories and current national policy
  • critically articulate the care needs of older people through the creative and innovative use of knowledge and skills
  • explore the use of personal effectiveness to demonstrate excellent service provision for older people.

How you learn

The award is delivered using distance-learning and student engagement with the resource material is essential for success. A virtual student community establishes as a support mechanism for you. A discussion board is available as part of the learning and teaching strategy and individual tutorial guidance using e-mail and telephone contact.

How you are assessed

The summative assessment is in two parts. The first part is a continuous engagement with material and contribution to online discussion; this is 1,000 words in total over the course of the award (25%). This is to be completed by week 10 of the award. The second part (75%) is a written assignment of 3,000 words based upon a title given to you. The assignment is to allow you to write about national and local policy drivers that influence care delivery. You are expected to write about excellence in practice and how your personal effectiveness can contribute to the care experience for older people and their carers. This is submitted in Week 12 of the award.
