This award is suitable for any health or social care professionals (and from related agencies and departments) seeking to develop their own personal effectiveness and leadership capability. It is designed to integrate the NHS Healthcare Leadership Model and uses a range of leadership diagnostic tools to aid self-assessment and the development of personal action plans to enhance effectiveness and leadership capability in the workplace.

Module content includes:

  • Transition to mastery
  • Leadership theory
  • NHS Healthcare Leadership Model
  • Personal effectiveness and inter-dependent practice
  • Self-assessment strategies
  • Feedback report from the 360-degree assessment and/or other diagnostic tools
  • Developing personal action plans
  • Principles and theories of reflection
  • Personality type workshop

How you learn

The award is delivered using a variety of learning strategies including seminars and workshops. You are also offered the opportunity to undertake the NHS Healthcare Leadership Model 360-degree or equivalent as part of the award and receive individual feedback from a trained model facilitator within the service improvement team. You are supported during the award through the use of tutorial support and the virtual learning environment (VLE).

How you are assessed

A 4,000-word reflective essay in which you evaluate critically your personal effectiveness in leadership within the context of your own role in practice following the development and implementation of a personal action plan.

To enhance leadership effectiveness in current or appointment to future leadership roles.

Entry requirements

Applicants will normally have an honours degree in a health or social care-related subject or equivalent work-based experience. Applicants with other qualifications may be considered if they can provide evidence of the ability to study at master's level. Minimum of 12 months' post-qualification experience and in a position to actively engage in the leadership of practice.

For international students:
IELTS 6.5 or equivalent standard which means the ability to successfully communicate both verbally and in written format.
