Further information

This module is for health care professionals with case management responsibility for patients with respiratory disease.

Respiratory diseases are very common and affect large numbers of people. Care for those with respiratory illness requires an inter-professional approach guided by best evidence and knowledge of the disease processes, and how they can be diagnosed and optimally managed to improve patient outcomes.

We combine a problem-based approach with systematic coverage of the common dimensions of lung disease to help guide and advance your knowledge and skills for effective respiratory disease case management. You address the symptoms and signs of respiratory disease, respiratory diagnostics, the common diseases and disorders of the respiratory system and the principles of holistic respiratory therapeutics through the patient's respiratory disease trajectory.

How you learn

Key lectures provide theoretical principles in respiratory disease management. These are further developed using a problem-based approach to advance understanding of the application of the principle to the clinical situation, and to facilitate the development of reflective practice and critical debate related to respiratory disease management.

E-learning@tees provides a support network for you when in practice and provides resources to guide your knowledge and skills development within respiratory care.
A portfolio of advanced practice competencies based directly on NICE, BTS and DH guidance is provided to support clinical supervision and application of knowledge to practice.

The portfolio of respiratory competencies provides the framework for ongoing formative feedback within the workplace.

Tutorial support is provided to support academic work.

How you are assessed

The summative assessment comprises a written assignment which demonstrates a systematic and critical approach to diagnostics and clinical decision-making within the scope of the respiratory practitioner's practice.

Entry requirements

Your employer must be able to provide a clinical supervisor for the duration of the module in order to ensure achievement of the portfolio of practice competencies
