This is multi-professional and delivered on-line, which makes use of a virtual learning environment enabling shared learning and encourages mutual professional respect and collaborative working. It is suitable for all health and social care professionals, whatever your role or position, as leadership is required at all levels. This e-learning module requires you to engage regularly in an online discussion with peers; learning collaboratively and exploring the concept of leadership and how this applies to your professional practice.

You explore the concept of leadership and its application to your work role. Leadership theories are examined and you critically evaluate your own potential as a leader within an organisational or multi-agency context and critically evaluate how the development of this will enhance personal effectiveness, collaborative-working and client care.

This is an online course and you access the learning material and are expected to take part in online discussions through the virtual learning environment.

How you learn

This module is delivered through distance-learning using the VLE. A variety of learning strategies are used and you are required to engage with learning materials to assist in critically evaluating key concepts, applying theory to practice and reflecting critically on your own leadership effectiveness and potential.

Engaging in personal reflection, undertaking recommended reading, engaging with open learning materials and participating in discussion board debate are vital elements of this award. As this module uses a constructivist approach to teaching and learning, independent reading around the module content is an essential requirement. Developing skills in collaborative learning is an important element of this module and you are expected to engage in online discussions with your peers on a weekly basis throughout the module.

Formative feedback is integrated throughout the module via tutor contributions to the discussion board. Engagement in a virtual classroom enables peer support and further development of understanding and facilitates reflection on the material.

A conference telephone call occurs in the early part of the module, offering you opportunity to introduce yourself to your peers and enabling clarification of module requirements. If required a further telephone conference call can be arranged in the later stages on the module to offer tutorial guidance and answer questions regarding the assessment criteria.

The formative assessment requires you to actively participate and contribute effectively to the award online discussion board. The summative assessment comprises of a written assignment of 4,000 words; which requires you to evaluate your leadership role and style and how this may be developed to enhance your professional practice.

Entry requirements

You should have an honour's degree in a health or social care related subject or equivalent work-based experience. If you have other qualifications may be considered if you can provide evidence of the ability to study at master's level.
