Further information

This award provides the appropriate theoretical background to undertake intravenous injections of contrast media and the appropriate pharmacological drugs used in radiographic examinations. The award is delivered over one and a half consecutive days in the University, after which you undertake intravenous procedures under the supervision of a named mentor in your clinical department, gaining competency and demonstrating the underpinning knowledge essential to undertake these procedures in clinical practice.

There are two components to this award:

  • Theoretical based element with some skills practice using commercial arm models. Intravenous injections and use of venflons, needles and butterflies are taught. This taught component assists with the submission of a written assignment – which is submitted two months after the theoretical component has been delivered. This is an individually written assignment of 3,500 - 4000 words based upon a hypothetical scenario that critically evaluates the issues associated with intravenous administration including the ethical medico-legal aspects, technique, management of adverse reactions and professional issues.
  • Clinical training under the guidance and supervision of a named supervisor including a record of clinical experience of procedures undertaken. This should be completed four months after the theoretical component has been delivered. Any radiographer who has successfully completed a hospital based certificate in IV administration, and can submit a signed declaration from the departmental manager, is exempt from the practice/competency component.

Teesside University Middlesbrough Campus.

The delivery is in the form of lecturers, practical sessions and seminars. There is a clinical component that is undertaken after the theoretical component has been delivered at the University. This is a pass/fail competency section.
