You develop the essential skills required to manage the business aspects of care from a practical perspective. The concept of a business approach to health and social care is examined in relation to managing physical and financial resources, information and change projects.

The key learning from this award is related to; managing performance, managing resources: physical and financial, business planning, budget management, managing information, decision-making, leading and managing change, user and carer involvement, governance and team dynamics.

How you learn

A range of learning and teaching strategies are used to engage you in active learning and comprise of a series of lectures and workshops over five study days, delivered over a period of five months. Learning and teaching strategies are student-centred to actively engage you in a critical analysis and application of the relevant concepts to gain knowledge, skills and confidence in your management role. Seminars and group work address key theories with application to the practice environment through critical debate.

How you are assessed

The focus of the assessment is based on your change project and is assessed in two parts.

  • The first part requires you to present the scope of your project to peers in the group in the form of a 15-minute presentation that critically analyses the drivers for the project and your approach to stakeholder involvement. This aspect supports 50% of the total marks awarded. The presentation will take place during the third study day in Week 12.
  • The second part (2,500 words 50% of the total marks) requires you to submit a report on the implementation and evaluation of your identified change project.
