This course enables you, as a registered healthcare professional, to recognise the deteriorating patient and to be able to respond appropriately.

It enhances and further develops your underpinning knowledge and problem-solving skills, improving patient outcomes through recognition and management of clinical deterioration in adult patients. You examine complex legal, professional and ethical issues – encouraging you to explore, challenge and appraise contemporary practice.

Module content includes:

  • haemodynamic assessment and monitoring
  • respiratory assessment and interventions
  • sepsis assessment and management (septic shock)
  • cardiogenic shock and cardiac monitoring (ECG recognition)
  • medical and surgical emergencies, for example, hypovolemic shock
  • anaphylactic shock
  • neurological assessment –acute confusional states, delirium and seizures
  • professional, legal and ethical dilemmas
  • decision-making and complex problem-solving
  • safeguarding
  • safe transfer of the deteriorating patient
  • management of the deteriorating adult
  • human factors
  • risk assessment.

How you learn

You learn through a variety of methods, including directed online learning activities. Seminars offer the chance to explore, discuss and debate complex care scenarios. There are opportunities to examine current approaches to the management of the deteriorating patient, questioning current practice within seminar groups or online discussion forums.  Distance learning is supported by the virtual learning environment (VLE).

How you are assessed

Your summative assessment comprises of a two-hour seen examination based on a scenario. The fictitious clinical scenario is released on the VLE two weeks prior to the written examination. The exam consists of four unseen questions related to the scenario.
