It enables you to recognise the palliative and end-of-life phase, manage the transition between palliative and end-of-life, and evaluate these approaches in your own area.

You study a variety of subjects related to palliative and end-of-life care including death and society, the philosophy of palliative care, current policy and guidelines, disease trajectories, ethical decision making, symptom management, communication, spirituality, care in the last days of life.

How you learn

You learn through a variety of teaching methods – lectures, seminars, student-led seminars and independent learning using the visual learning environment.

How you are assessed

The learning is assessed in two parts. Part A is a poster presentation. You prepare a poster that illustrates your understanding of a current key issue in palliative or end-of-life care. You then present the poster and participate in a five-minute question and answer session with module tutors. Part B is a 4,000-word case study where you critically analyse and evaluate a patient’s episode of care.

Entry requirements

You must work in a health or social care setting where patients are in need of palliative or end-of-life care.
