Further information

This award has two modules, Mentoring in Practice and Enhancing the Role of the Practice Teacher. If you are working towards practice teacher status this enables you to meet the requirements of the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC).

If you are a specialist community public health nurse, or if you support students undertaking specialist practitioner qualifications, you can also apply.

Professional accreditation

If you are working towards mentor and practice teacher status, this enables you to meet the requirements of the NMC (2008).

The first module is ten weeks and provides a theoretical basis on educational principles and their application to the process of mentoring a learner in practice. You have a weekly session with a mixture of lectures, seminars and workshops, supported by worksheets, e-learning and self-directed learning.

The second module develops your application of knowledge in a practice teaching role. This is delivered over 10 weeks through an initial taught day followed by a series of three workshops. You work with your student in practice supported by a sign off practice teacher.

How you learn

The first module includes lectures, seminars and workshops, supported by worksheets, e-learning and self-directed learning.

In the second module the workshops combine action learning sets to advance your problem solving skills in dealing with real world problems. Scenario-based activities expose you to a wide range of situations, learner behaviours, and failure to progress, responsibility, accountability, proficiency and fitness for practice. You explore the context of practice teaching focusing on applying theoretical concepts and attributes. Peer reviewed assessments develop and enhance your skills in preparation for an observed simulation.

How you are assessed

The first module is assessed through a 4,000 word reflective portfolio of the achievement of the NMC standards for mentors.

The second module is assessed by logging teaching practice and assessing hours spent with students. In addition to the teaching practice hours in the Mentoring in Practice module, this module provides further teaching practice hours to meet the requirements of the NMC for practice teacher status.

The summative assessment has two elements:

a 30 minute observed sign off mentor simulation assessed in week nine which you pass or fail

a portfolio of evidence (100%) which includes:

  • your log of 30 days of teaching and assessing hours spent with students studying NMC programmes
  • completion of the practice teacher verification document
  • your log of sign of practice teacher supervision
  • your log of formal assessments undertaken in practice in conjunction with an academic institution and a 2,000 word critical review of an episode from the teaching log (submitted in week 10).

Entry requirements

You must have attended a Trust Mentor Preparation Workshop in the previous three months.

For the first module you must have an experienced, qualified mentor or practice teacher to supervise you. Nurses and midwives must have 21 hours of protected learning time in their practice setting over the length of the module.

You are involved in the facilitation of learning, teaching and assessment of students undertaking an approved NMC programme, and must have two years registration within the area of clinical expertise. You act as a practice teacher to students in specialist community public health nursing or students under taking a specialist practice qualification. This must be under the supervision of a qualified practice teacher.
