Further information

It is essential that you have a student allocated to you from either the SCPHN or SPQ programmes to demonstrate the competencies, knowledge and skills for this module. The module starts in January 2019 but we recognise that you will have a student allocated from September 2018 and so we offer a workshop in late September 2018 to brief all students as to what evidence is required for the Practice Teacher module.

You reflect on teaching and assessing experiences and study problem solving in practice teaching. You consider the development of your expertise as a practice teacher, your leadership in practice teaching, and in having difficult conversations and failure to fail.

How you learn

You learn through discussion and action learning. The group size is low (maximum about 10) to facilitate group discussion. The module leader leads all the teaching, and conducts the assessment.

How you are assessed

Feedback is offered throughout the module to assist your progression and development. The assessment is in two parts:

  • a viva (oral exam) to demonstrate your knowledge and skills to support a challenging student in practice
  • a portfolio of evidence showing how you have supported a student in practice, the support you have accessed throughout this time, a mapping process to show you have achieved the practice teacher standards as set by the Nursing & Midwifery Council, and a record of your assessment of your own student.

There is a session planned for the week before the viva for you to practise and prepare.

Work placement

You study this module whilst working in your usual place of work – there are no specific placements.

Career opportunities

By completing this module, you have a professional qualification in supporting learning and assessing in clinical practice along with 20 credits at level 7. This demonstrates your ability professionally as well as academically, supporting your professional development.
