How to Handle the Media

Do you know your doorstep from your deadline, a soundbite from a strapline or a punch up from a puff?

This new course will give you these answers and much more. Designed for new entrants to a PR or marketing team and for executives or managers who may expect to come into contact with the media, this three-day intensive programme has been jointly developed by Teesside University and leading PR agency DTW.

What you study

DTW You cover positive and negative PR and practice advice on dealing with the media in a crisis. You also gain an understanding of how journalists think and behave. In addition you cover practical exercises in dealing with PR scenarios relevant to your own sectors, including TV interview and playback, as well as best practice guidance in drafting press releases and statements. The course tutors are experienced media training specialists, many with a background in news reporting for regional and national media. Delivered in the superbly equipped media centre at Teesside University, you experience the reality of working in a live TV studio environment.

You study at the main University campus in Middlesbrough.

How you learn and are assessed

You produce a portfolio of work demonstrating a basic understanding of communications strategies and a range of communications skills. This includes:

  • a news release (approx 400 words)
  • key message development
  • a series of recorded interviews for TV, radio and newspapers.

New entrants to a PR or marketing team and executives or managers who come into contact with the media will benefit from this course. It equips you with the skills and knowledge you need to take on the challenges of communicating key messages to the print and broadcast media industry.

Entry requirements

While a degree is not necessary, you should be able to demonstrate an ability to complete and benefit from the course.
