Further information

You learn about the nutritional requirements of the general population and the food sources of nutrients in the diet. As you progress through the module, you understand about the impact of exercise on these nutritional needs and how athletes can achieve an appropriate diet. You also learn how to assess the nutritional status of an athlete and develop the skills to create individualised nutrition strategies. You need to be able to study at level 6 or have appropriate experience.

The course runs on Tuesdays, 2.00pm – 6.00pm in four block sessions on the dates above. The module involves a considerable amount of online support, learning materials and work that you do within your own time. So it fits perfect into most busy schedules.

How you learn

Throughout the course you work with a real case study and apply your knowledge to the assessment of their nutritional status. Using the knowledge and skills you acquire, you produce practical strategies to assist the athlete in improving their nutrition and evaluate the work that you do. You produce a portfolio of data and evidence for assessment and this is submitted in week 12. Your module tutor helps you develop your portfolio and gather the information needed. You gain valuable, practical experience that you can then use in your job or day to day life.

Your module tutor is Claire Harrison. Claire is a Registered sport and exercise nutritionist who has worked with the English Institute of Sport, some of the region’s top football teams, Olympic athletes and sports people across the North East. Claire brings years of experience to the classroom and brings alive the concepts that you learn by using case studies as examples of applying theory to practice. This makes your learning experience relevant, exciting and enjoyable.

Career opportunities

The UCPD extends the skill portfolio and provide a qualification for anyone who is looking to gain nutritional knowledge when working with athletes or individuals participating in exercise at all levels. This can enhance the profile of coaches and personal trainers looking to offer an extended range of support to their clients. In a competitive market, this will support any career opportunities available.

Entry requirements

Appropriate prior educational experience is required in order that the level 6 standard of study can be undertaken. In addition, professional experience in the area of sport and/or nutrition may be useful.
