More information

This programme is designed to take technical graduates with no previous experience of computer games development and provide them with the skills and knowledge to obtain employment within the computer games industry. It features a core curriculum covering the subject areas used to construct a contemporary commercial computer game whilst developing the necessary research skills to enable you to pursue higher study. Exposure to real-world industry practices and practitioners is provided by a dedicated module.

What you study

This programme has been designed to develop your knowledge of the techniques, challenges and practices used to develop cutting-edge commercial computer games. It develops your cognitive skills to enable critical evaluation of the techniques and methodologies used in the subject research publications. It improves your research skills to enable autonomous problem solving and to support further study (including MPhil and/or PhD). It also helps you develop a range of practical, professional and key transferable skills necessary for employment within the computer games industry.

How you learn

Knowledge and understanding are developed through lecture sessions followed up by appropriate practical workshops, student-led enquiry and discussions in contact sessions and via the electronic discussion forums.

Cognitive skills are developed through the practical workshops and student-led enquiry. Practical and professional skills are developed via the contact sessions, including exposure to industry practitioners, and the practical work based upon real-world scenarios. Developing key transferable skills is a common theme throughout the course strengthened by the student-led enquiry-based learning utilised by most modules and the exposure to real-world studio practices in the Game Studio Practice module.

How you are assessed

Learning outcomes are assessed by individual coursework requiring research, analysis, design and implementation of software components suitable for use within commercial computer games. The key transferable skills are assessed via a major implementation project requiring self-management and the written and/or oral presentation of coursework results.

Career opportunities

Typically graduates of this course would be well suited for careers within the computer games industry.
