The course is attractive to international students wishing to study within a different culture, as well as home students wishing to experience a wide range of cultures and develop international knowledge. The programme focuses on areas such as global decision-making within operations and finance, global economics and cultural issues within management in an international environment. It equips you with:

  • knowledge and understanding of the global influences on business and an ability to analyse management decisions in an international setting
  • an understanding of and an opportunity to study recent advances in management theory, research and practice. This aim is supported by the research modules Business Research and Business Research Methods.

The programme develops your understanding of strategic and change management alongside cross-cultural and internationalisation aspects of business. It reflects the main functional areas of international business and integrates theoretical knowledge with practical enterprise skills in a global context.

Course structure

Core modules

Business Research

This module develops your awareness and understanding of the practical considerations that underpin business management research. You explore the purpose, logic, process and output of research, the ethical principles underpinning business research, the practicalities that influence research design, including researcher skills, timescales and costs, and how to use academic and practitioner literature to support research design.

Business Research Methods

This module develops your awareness and understanding of the factors that impact research design for business and management students. You explore the ethical principles underpinning business research, research methodologies, data type, collection and analysis, research methods and how to present a research proposal and dissertation.

Dissertation

You will integrate your learning and development and synthesise knowledge and understanding of theory and practice through its application to organisational issues, which are demonstrably concerned with development within the organisation. You are supported throughout the process by a supervising tutor who will monitor progress and ensure that you are appraised of your on-going performance. Usually the dissertation should be completed within one year.

Global Business Environment: Culture, Management and the Economy

Managing Operations and Finance

This module examines the principles and practice of managing finances and operations within organisations. You look at how to manage resources efficiently and effectively within a dynamic environment using operational and financial information. You also examine the pressures and impact this has on organisational control.

Managing People in Organisations

Managers in organisations recognise that, if they are going to be successful, they need to tap into the skills and knowledge of their employees. How are they going to do this? This question has been at the centre of management thought over the course of the last century. Human resource management, as an academic discipline and a professional practice, explores the various dimensions of this question. In this module you consider, evaluate, analyse and apply a set of principles, values and approaches to leading and managing people. You look at how people can maximise their added-value to their own development and to corporate goals.

Marketing Principles and Practices

You develop an understanding of the importance of marketing within a range of organisations and the critical factors for consideration as a marketing manager. This module will be the theoretical underpinning of marketing on your programme and will allow you to develop your knowledge and application of skills within further modules of study. You gain an understanding of the key ethical considerations relating to marketing.

Strategic Management in an International Context

The module develops your awareness of the principles of strategic analysis, design and implementation in an international context.

How you learn

This programme produces graduates who possess a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of international management as well as a range of practical, professional and key transferable skills required for graduate employability and life-long learning.

  • Lectures will be the primary vehicle, within contact time, for delivering the relevant subject knowledge.
  • You engage in group work, class debate, directed reading, the analysis of case studies and research. There will be case study preparation and debriefs, group work, presentations and debriefs, and directed team work.
  • You have the opportunity for independent learning, digital literacy workshops, group exercises, preparation for assignments and the dissertation.
  • You are expected to demonstrate the ability to manage your own time, and to work to deadlines. Project plans are incorporated into all assessments.

All programme modules have a site in the University's Virtual Learning Environment, which adheres as a minimum to the University's Threshold Quality Standards. All modules will include electronic submission, assessment and feedback.

How you are assessed

The programme assessment strategy has been designed to assess your subject specific knowledge, cognitive and intellectual skills and transferable skills applicable to the workplace. The strategy ensures that you are provided with formative assessment opportunities throughout the programme which support your summative assessments. The overall assessment load has been balanced to prevent, as far as possible, bunching of assessments.

The assessments will include assignments, business reports, case studies, presentations, research proposal and literature review, and the production of a dissertation. The assessments may include individual or group essays or reports.

The assessment criteria, where appropriate, will include assessment of presentation skills and report writing.

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirement is one of the following:

  • an honours degree (at least a 2:2) in a relevant/related discipline
  • a post-experience or professional qualification
  • equivalent qualifications (including international qualifications).
  • For EU and international students, an IELTS score (or equivalent) of 6.
