    Computer Animation & Visual Effects

    Teesside is one of the best-equipped learning environments for anybody seeking a career in animation or visual effects. We have purpose-built facilities housing dedicated life drawing spaces, recording studio, motion-capture studio and a fully equipped sound stage including green screen facilities and motion-control cameras.

 

This course responds to a specific industry niche, capitalising on the industry and academic experience of our staff members.You focus heavily on specialised computer animation and visual effects practice. We have extensive facilities to support this work – both software and hardware. Staff have technical expertise in maths, computing and Linux, and the creativity to help you produce convincing animation and visual effects that look great. You study four core modules in pairs and negotiate your personal learning goals for each module with your tutor.

Modules

Block 1

2D Tools and Techniques

You negotiate your personal learning goals and specialism with your tutor. This can include advanced compositing techniques, camera projection, set extensions and digital matte paining. Your practical sessions enable you to produce and manipulate 2D, 2.5D and 3D assets and explore real world complex compositing and VFX scenarios.

You are assessed individually through a portfolio of practical work and a short written report

3D Tools and Techniques

You negotiate your personal learning goals and specialism with your tutor, the emphasis being on the 3D elements and workflows that are crucial in the VFX production pipeline. Areas you can focus on include advanced lighting, rigging and creature effects, advanced shaders and rendering.

You are assessed individually through a portfolio of practical work and a short written report

 

Block 2

Effects Animation

You explore the fundamental simulation tools and techniques used in effects animation. Using a combination of software, scripting and some underpinning mathematics you create convincing simulations of a variety of real-world phenomena commonly used in visual effects practice.

VFX Industry Practice

In preparation for your major VFX project you explore and use an extensive range of effects related facilities and software available to you. You also carry out VFX research tasks on given themes to demonstrate a critical understanding of the history, development and future of the VFX industry and its methods of production.

Major VFX Project

You undertake a major, in-depth, individual study in an aspect of the course. Computer animation and visual effects master’s projects can be drawn from both creative and technical based problem areas. You research and investigate aspects of your area of study and produce a major deliverable such as a substantial VFX sequence that combines a range of techniques. You also critically evaluate your major deliverable, including obtaining third party evaluation where appropriate.

You present your major deliverable(s) via a poster display and a product demonstration/show reel of completed assets. The research, project process and evaluation is reported via an accompanying written narrative which contextualises the output. The written report, the major deliverable and your presentation of the product are assessed.

The project management process affords supported opportunities for goal setting, reflection and critical evaluation of achievement.

You undertake live projects guided by industry practice and you discuss and negotiate with your tutors what area(s) of investigation you wish to explore

How you are assessed

Your learning is assessed by individual coursework. This includes practical implementations and reports which demonstrate a critical evaluation of the practical process, techniques and end product, plus supporting evidence of research into specified areas.

You present your work to your peers and tutors within lab-based sessions to receive both formative and summative feedback.

We provide detailed marking criteria with each assessment. Due to the practical nature of this programme, we allocate more marks to the practical work than the report.

Entry requirements

2.2 honours degree (or above) in animation or computing or significantly documented relevant industrial experience. You must submit a portfolio with examples of 3D/2D visual effects work as part of the admissions process.
