Criminology & Sociology

This academic programme has been designed to develop professional practice in complex contexts and promote advanced vocational capabilities based upon DANOS (Drugs and National Occupational Standards) criteria.

You explore a range of issues and debates arising from contemporary patterns of drug use in the UK (such as heroin use, the normalisation of recreational drugs and the relationship between drug use and crime). You also examine critically national and international drug strategies.

How you learn

The programme is taught through lectures, seminars, workshops and within computer laboratories. It is student led and at times you conduct presentations within small groups. In addition to the formal contact time, there are opportunities to discuss your work in individual tutorials.

How you are assessed

The programme is primarily assessed through essays and coursework. There is also some case study work, SPSS exercises and presentations. The programme concludes with a 20,000-word dissertation.

Career opportunities

Opportunities include working with drug agencies, such as Addictive Behaviour Services, and working in related fields such as the criminal justice system. This programme is also ideal if you're interested in an academic career in either research or teaching.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally have a good second-class honours degree in a relevant field. However, those who have relevant professional qualifications and/or relevant experience will also be considered.
