This programme provides the launch platform for individuals aspiring to become successful engineering managers. The programme is designed to provide individuals with the opportunity to gain fundamental knowledge of engineering business processes and in parallel to develop the management skills needed to operate successfully in the engineering sector, from small to medium enterprises to global conglomerates.
This course is aimed at developing managers, and those with management potential who wish to follow careers in various engineering industries. It is unique in that it has been specifically designed for scientists, engineers, technologists aspiring to become engineering managers, but also for individuals with a non-technical background who wish to develop the skills to operate in an engineering or industrial environment.
Upon completion of the course you should be in a position to handle diverse management responsibilities which require knowledge in finance, systems thinking, operations, human resources, the design and management of the supply chain, product development or project management. Taught by experienced academic staff, the material is leading edge and includes a high level of industrial and business relevance throughout.
What you study
On completion of the course, you will have:
- an advanced understanding of the key strategic issues involved in developing and implementing engineering projects and solutions
- in-depth knowledge and understanding of current and emerging engineering management issues
- professional-level skills in research, analysis and evaluation of complex business problems underpinned by a methodical approach to problem solving and decision making
- skills in the use of analytical tools and techniques which can be used to improve internal and external engineering operations and services.
- a broad management and business education
How you learn
The taught elements of the course are delivered by a combination of lectures, tutorials and group/seminar work on the basis of a roughly six-week block mode delivery. At least two blocks are required for each award stage (ie approximately 12 weeks for a PgCert and further 12 weeks for a PgDip). The master’s research dissertation follows the completion of the classroom-based taught elements and lasts for approximately 18 weeks.
The structure is designed to provide flexibility for those who are in employment and wish to study on a part-time or bite-size basis, and is also well suited for those who wish to study full time. The main campus provides access to learning resources in the award-winning University Library for assignment and master’s research dissertation work, as well as access to other facilities such as the Students’ Union and the health and sports facilities.
How you are assessed
Assessment varies from module to module. The assessment methodology could include in-course assignments, presentations or formal examinations.
Career opportunities
Engineering Management graduates may enter a broad range of careers including but not confined to the manufacturing, oil & gas industries, renewable energy sector, engineering product development, engineering services and government regulatory sectors.
Entry requirements
Applicants should normally have at least a UK second-class honours degree, or an equivalent internationally recognised qualification, usually in an engineering, technological or business related subject. Other qualifications and relevant experience will be assessed on an individual basis.
In addition, international applicants will require an English language qualification to at least IELTS 6.0.
For additional information please see the undergraduate and postgraduate entry requirements in our admissions section
Industrial experience
Each year a number of events are organised which could include industrial visits, external speakers, research project conferences and group case studies – all designed to put academic theory and practice into a real-world context. Students studying Master’s level will also be required to complete an engineering management related project.
Intermediate awards
Study can lead to the award of a postgraduate certificate at Stage 1 (60 credits), a postgraduate diploma at Stage 2 (120 credits) or, on completion of a research project, the MSc (total 180 credits)
