PgDip/MSc Oil and Gas Management

This course is ideal if you are intending to pursue a management career in the oil and gas industry, or if you are already working in the sector and would like to develop management skills and knowledge at master’s level. Graduates from a range of technical, non-technical and commercial backgrounds are eligible to apply.

These courses broaden your technical skills in essential areas directly relevant to the oil and gas sector. It has several optional themes to direct you into specialist areas of knowledge such as project management, economics and finance, international human resources management, and environmental management. The 60-credit dissertation module allows you to conduct a supervised research project developing original knowledge in a specific area of oil and gas management. Teesside is a major European centre for the chemical and petroleum processing sector, making it an ideal location to study this field. The oil and gas industry is well represented with a range of internationally recognised companies operating in the region.

The programme structure is divided into a combination of 10 and 20-credit taught modules delivered over two semesters. Following successful completion of these modules, you proceed to a 60-credit research project.

For the postgraduate diploma (PgDip) award you must successfully complete 120 credits of taught modules. For an MSc award you must successfully complete 120 credits of taught modules and a 60-credit master's research project.

Global Oil and Gas Industry

Oil and Gas Economics and Contracts

Practical Health and Safety Skills

This module ensures you are able to work in a safe manner during practical sessions. You learn about the need to adhere to health and safety regulations. You are also taught good practice and learn how to maximise your safety and the safety of others.

Quality Health Safety and Environment

This module gives you an understanding of the aims, responsibilities and means to achieve effective quality, health, safety, and environment management systems in the oil and gas sector. Critical components of safety management (including a HSE plan, process safety, hazard identification, safety auditing and managing risk) form a comprehensive part of the study. You use case studies to enhance your learning. You also discuss the impact of legal and administrative compliance, occupational health and safety and sustainability.

Research and Enterprise

This module offers foundation knowledge in a range of research methods. It illustrates the significant role that theoretical principles play in the research process and the importance of presenting clear and credible arguments and evidence to support the design and findings of research.

Risk Management in Projects

We provide you with an advanced level of study in risk management in projects. You explore a range of tools and techniques used in risk identification, qualitative and quantitative risk analysis, risk-planning responses, PERT and risk monitoring. You learn about financial risk, project-appraisal methods and the application of a decision tree within a project.

You gain awareness of probability theory that represents the corner stone of risk management. Invited speakers from the industry give an overview of risk management in different projects; for example IT, finance, construction, and oil and gas. You work in groups on project case studies which apply risk management theory. In addition, you gain hands-on experience in applying the @RISK© tool to a variety of scenarios of risk factors. You develop a deep understanding of the systematic process of risk management and application of @RISK© software.

Supply Chain Management

This module demonstrates how to benchmark an organisation and introduces you to the concepts of key performance indicators, total quality management (TQM), six sigma, total productive maintenance (TPM) and supply chain management. You learn the manufacturing assessment methodology based on data provided in a benchmarking case study. Topics covered in TQM, TPM, and supply chain management enable you to plan activities, which improve quality programme maintenance planning and supply chain integration for an organisation and move that organisation towards sustainable competitive advantage.

Managing in a Challenging Environment

You develop a systematic understanding of the nature of organisations and how they function and a critical awareness of the current challenges facing contemporary organisations. You are encouraged to critically reflect on the leadership skills and values required to better support organisations through the difficult challenges they may encounter.

Managing Operations and Finance

This module examines the principles and practice of managing finances and operations within organisations. You look at how to manage resources efficiently and effectively within a dynamic environment using operational and financial information. You also examine the pressures and impact this has on organisational control.

 

MSc only

Research Project

On successful completion of the taught modules, you proceed to this 60-credit research project. It allows you to bring together everything you have learnt on the course to address a relevant problem.

How you learn

The course is delivered through a series of lectures, tutorials and computer laboratory sessions. The course is jointly delivered by the School of Science & Engineering and the School of Social Sciences, Business & Law.

Lectures convey substantial elements of the subject content, provide explanations of complex concepts, and set the scene for your independent learning.

Tutorials and seminars provide a context for interactive learning and allow you to explore relevant topics in depth.

Some of the modules require specialised technical software and practical computer-based sessions are timetabled. You are supported in technical modules by excellent laboratory and computing facilities.

Coursework may include technical reports, analysis and design calculations, essays, project and design exercises and verbal presentations. Some of the modules are assessed by formal examinations.

Career opportunities

The course equips you with the relevant technical skills to pursue a career as technical manager in the oil and gas sector in consultancies, contracting companies and government organisations.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have at least a lower second class (2.2) UK honours degree, or equivalent qualification, including subjects in engineering, science, business and management.

Non-UK students must also meet the University's minimum English language requirements.
