This course provides the opportunity for you to develop the skills and knowledge needed to advance practice within your own specialist area effectively.

It assists individual practitioners in developing the skills needed to facilitate the advancement of practice through critical analysis, synthesis and application of relevant underpinning theories. You have an opportunity to focus on a specific area of practice for development and integrate evidence-based processes progressively in order to advance practice. This culminates in an evaluation of the project.

What you study

Year 1 provides a transition to postgraduate study. It also furnishes you with a sound foundation in core skills and an understanding of the healthcare context. Year 2 progresses you to focusing on application and further development of a framework for advancing practice. Year 3 culminates in the consolidation of your knowledge and the development of your dissertation.

How you learn

A variety of teaching strategies is employed within the course to develop and enhance skills and knowledge. These include lectures, student-led seminars, computer-based workshops, individual/group tutorials and distance learning approaches.

How you are assessed

Assessment strategies utilised within the course are devised to establish your achievement of specified outcomes. Feedback is given for each assessment to assist you with development and as a measurement of your learning. Strategies include written report, essays, portfolio, research proposals and a dissertation.

Career opportunities

This course will contribute to providing you with further opportunities for career progression. The enhanced personal and professional skills that you develop can expand career opportunities in areas of leadership, implementing and progressing change in practice, and also the evaluation of advancements in practice.

Entry requirements

Applicants should be graduates from a health and social care background. Qualified health or social care professionals who can provide evidence of the ability to work at postgraduate level are also welcome to apply.
