The course is designed to provide a structured professional development pathway for postgraduate physiotherapists and occupational therapists with a specialist interest and experience in the field of neurological rehabilitation. It enables you to develop a comprehensive and critical understanding of evidence-based clinical practice and the skills to implement this in diverse settings within neurological rehabilitation. Key features of the course are inter-professional collaboration, user involvement and flexible study.
What you study
The pathway is made up of core modules, specialist modules and an option module. The core modules focus on evidence-based practice and research, and include the opportunity to carry out an independent research study. The three specialist modules explore diverse clinical and practice issues in neurological rehabilitation. You choose an option module in an area of special interest and of particular relevance to the context in which you are working.
How you learn
A variety of teaching methods will be used including lectures, seminars, debates, small group work, tutorials and practical skills-based work. Learning and teaching strategies will help you to relate theory to practice issues critically, and to develop as a self-directed, independent learner. The core modules are delivered on a weekly basis (one afternoon per week) and may also be available online (subject to discussion with the module leader). Each specialist module will involve attendance at two teaching blocks (two days each) which are separated by a period of self-directed study.
Learning resources include work books, group work, the virtual learning environment and facilitation from the module team. External lecturers from specialist areas within the field of rehabilitation will contribute to delivery of the modules.
At the beginning of the course you will be assigned a personal tutor who will provide support through tutorial meetings face to face during taught study blocks and via email.
How you are assessed
A variety of written assignments including case studies from practice will be used in the assessments. For example, in the Evidence-based Practice module, you will complete a 3,000-word review for general management outlining the direction of an aspect of clinical practice (in the light of critically appraised research and current policy). And in the Advanced Assessment and Evaluation in Neurological Rehabilitation module, you complete a 4,000-word written assignment demonstrating skills of critical selection, critical evaluation application and assessment in relation to a ‘client‘case study (delivered by video).
Career opportunities
The course will enhance your ability to secure employment in roles which require advanced practitioners with high-level skills and competencies to develop further the evidence base and quality of rehabilitation services and clinical management for clients with neurological dysfunction.
Entry requirements
Applicants will normally be postgraduate physiotherapists and occupational therapists with a minimum of a 2.2 degree and who are registered with the Health Professionals Council. You also need experience in practice and to be currently working in the field of neurological rehabilitation.
Applicants with other qualifications and experience may be considered if they can provide evidence of their ability to study at master’s level, and their previous qualifications are considered commensurate with the full CAMS level III criteria.
