The challenges faced by the NHS, including an ageing workforce, rise in chronic conditions and complex co-morbidities and recruitment difficulties, have encouraged the development of advanced roles and innovative attitudes toward the mix of skills in teams with advanced practitioners increasingly seen as key to delivering healthcare services.

The course is clinically focused and helps you develop an expert knowledge base, complex decision-making skills and clinical competences – characteristics shaped by the context of your practice. In your third year, you complete a student-negotiated independent integrated portfolio of evidence which demonstrates achievement of the four pillars of advanced practice, and culminates in you developing an article for publication.

Course structure

Year 1 core modules

Advanced Physical Assessment Skills and Disease Management

This module equips you with the core knowledge and skills required for complex clinical assessment including focused history taking, examination and investigative analysis to formulate differential diagnosis and disease management across a range of complex and simple presentations in primary and acute care.

Competencies for Advanced Practitioner

You develop your knowledge and skills within the four pillars of advanced clinical practice – research, education, leadership and clinical. You are supported to develop and apply advanced knowledge and skills to your practice through work-based learning.

 

Year 2 core modules

Designing Research Projects

You gain the knowledge and skills you need to design and manage a primary or secondary research audit or evaluation project that’s relevant to your practice. You also cover research governance and ethics, and prepare for applying for ethical approval or release. And we prepare you for your dissertation if you choose to progress to the master’s programme.

How you learn

You learn through a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, laboratory-based learning, structured resource-based learning, electronic discussion, action learning sets, masterclasses, formative assessment, distance learning, tutorials, small-group work, research tutorials, practical skills-based sessions and work-based learning. In the Designing Research Project module you can opt for a traditional taught approach, a distance-learning route or a combination of both. You focus on an area of your practice that you can develop in subsequent study which culminates in an article prepared for publication on your specialist subject.

How you are assessed

You are assessed using various methods. These may include written assignments, work-based learning through advanced practitioner competencies, consultation clinics, reflective accounts, portfolio development, critical appraisal and evaluation of the evidence base, modified objective structured long examination review (MOSLER), viva (oral exam), patient case studies to develop and exhibit high levels of clinical reasoning, and practical examinations to demonstrate advanced decision-making skills.

Career opportunities

Through this course, you develop your core transferable skills as an advanced practitioner with a high level of clinical autonomy in roles which require assessing, diagnosing, treating and managing people with undifferentiated and/or complex clinical presentations. It is suitable if you are already operating in an advanced clinical role and require advanced skills development.

Entry requirements

You should be a registered healthcare professional with an honours degree in a health-related subject and previous physical assessment skills experience, normally employed at equivalent of band 6 (or above) in a role with responsibility for a patient caseload. You should have a minimum of three years post-registration experience and be able to organise a suitable practice supervisor to support you in practice.

Under recognition of prior learning (RPL) you may be awarded credits for previous study or related work experience which can be credited towards the course you want to study. Find out more about RPL.
