More information

Effective workforce planning is key to supporting the Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) agenda. This course is for directorate managers in health and social care and those who have a responsibility for innovation and improvement to change the way people work in organisations.

The course enables you to develop:

  • a critical and comprehensive understanding of the knowledge and skills required to support effective workforce planning in complex and diverse organisations
  • a strategic approach to workforce planning to support new ways of working and critical decision making in relation to improving services
  • self direction and originality in planning and implementing a workforce strategy to support quality, innovation and productivity.

How you learn

You learn through a combination of theoretical lectures, practical workshops, group work and seminars. Lectures are presented by leaders in the field of workforce planning and workshops help you practise the tools and techniques for formulating workforce plans. Group work helps you link theory to practice and discuss the subject in more detail. Seminars let you discuss and question issues and gain feedback on your understanding of the subject area. You take the learning from the key lectures and workshops and apply these to the development of a specific workforce planning project within your workplace.

The use of the virtual learning environment (VLE) enhances communication between course participants and tutors. It also provides a forum for communication and debate. Learning resources are added to the VLE to complement lectures and workshops.

How you are assessed

You are required to evidence your learning in terms of your ability to demonstrate a critical and comprehensive understanding of workforce planning. A range of assessment methods is used to achieve this, including written assignments and a presentation.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally have an honours degree in a health or social care related subject or in management. Applicants with other qualifications and experience may be considered if they can provide evidence of their ability to study at master’s level. Such applicants will be invited to discuss individual needs with the programme team and programme leader.

You need to be in a position within your organisation which enables you to plan, implement and evaluate workforce needs. You also need the support of your organisation as the programme involves workbased learning.
