A specialised tissue culture laboratory, a hydroponics laboratory and specialist facility to research the ability of micro-organisms to clean polluted environments are also available.

Research activity is organised within the Technology Futures Institute which provides a supportive environment for supervision, resource allocation and networking with other researchers.
The School of Science & Engineering has a broad range of facilities for carrying out research and development work, including extensive modern laboratory facilities for analytical science, materials science and processing microbiology, molecular biology and food technology. We also have excellent facilities for nano- and microfabrication, including clean rooms (class 100 and class 1000), photolithography, wet and dry etching, metallisation and thin film deposition, screen printing, hot embossing, micro-injection moulding, laser ablation and device packaging.
We have recently invested heavily in a range of analytical facilities including environmental electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, surface energy measurement system, thermal analysis (Simultaneous TGA/DTA), electrochemical impedance and a scanning electrochemical microscope.
Our research is heavily applications driven and involves extensive collaboration with UK and international organisations. Current sponsors and collaborators include DTI, Rolls Royce, Newage, Goodrich, LG-Philips, Masonlite, Epichem, Attiger Ltd, University of Liverpool, Wroclaw University of Technology (Poland), Queen Mary University, Brunel University, Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) and One NorthEast.
