What is clearing?

Clearing is a part of the UCAS university application process. It’s a way for universities and colleges to fill any spaces they have left for the new academic year, and an ideal way for you to get a place.

You would use clearing for many different reasons. Maybe you didn’t achieve the grades you’d hoped, maybe you’ve changed your mind on where you want to live or the course you want to study, or you might have decided that you want to go to university after all.

When can you use clearing?

Clearing is available from July to September. If you already have your exam results but no offers, or you’ve just decided that university is for you, you can use Clearing from July. If you had conditional offers but your exam results didn't go to plan, or you’ve changed your mind and you now want to study with us, you can use Clearing from results day.

What is adjustment?

If you have done better than you expected and exceeded conditions for your firm choice, you might think about looking for an alternative course. Adjustment is available from 17 - 31 August. Find out more about adjustment on the UCAS website
