There are three routes you can select from to gain a postgraduate Master’s award:

  • MSc Project Management – one year full time
  • MSc Project Management – two years part time
  • MSc Project Management (with Advanced Practice) – two years full time

The one-year programme is a great option if you want to gain a traditional MSc qualification – you can find out more here. This two-year master’s degree with advanced practice enhances your qualification by adding to the one-year master’s programme an internship, research or study abroad experience. This course develops the competencies required by project managers in the modern engineering, manufacturing, construction, telecom, process, oil and gas industries.

The MSc Project Management (with Advanced Practice) offers you the chance to enhance your qualification by completing an internship, research or study abroad experience in addition to the content of the one-year MSc.

You gain significant analytical, interpersonal and practical competencies through tailored modules that cover advance planning and visualisation, risk management, procurement and contract strategy, health and safety, managing operations and finance, project management and enterprise, and managing change or PRINCE2®. You also undertake a major research project that allows you to specialise in a field of interest to you. Teesside University has a strong research record in project management.This course is suitable if you are a new or recent university graduates seeking a career in project management. It is also suitable if you are a practitioner with relevant industrial experience intending to undertake a project management role and responsibilities within your organisation.

Course structure

Core modules

Advanced Project Planning and Visualisation

This module will provide students with knowledge and understanding of the principles of project planning and management. Students will explore a range of advanced planning and visualisation techniques used to increase cost and resource efficiency in engineering projects.

Managing Operations and Finance

This module examines the principles and practice of managing finances and operations within organisations. You look at how to manage resources efficiently and effectively within a dynamic environment using operational and financial information. You also examine the pressures and impact this has on organisational control.

Practical Health and Safety Skills

This module ensures you are able to work in a safe manner during practical sessions. You learn about the need to adhere to health and safety regulations. You are also taught good practice and learn how to maximise your safety and the safety of others.

Procurement and Contract Strategy

This module aims at developing your knowledge and critical understanding of the types of procurement arrangements and contract strategies that are commonly used in the engineering sector, including construction, oil and gas, heavy civil engineering and production. It also provides an introduction to Contract Law to allow you to better understand the legal framework in which engineering companies and projects are managed.

Project Management and Enterprise

This module is designed to equip you with the necessary skills to successfully project manage new product developments focusing on project management skills and processes, quality assurance issues, new product development processes and statistical analysis techniques. It provides you with an opportunity to develop a project plan for a programme of research based on scientific literature, with particular reference to key concepts such as innovation, enterprise and originality.

This fundamental project management basis is interlinked with developing an understanding of entrepreneurial best practices to enable you to transfer your ideas into the commercial arena. This element of the module focuses on intellectual property rights, legal, regulatory and ethical issues, business start-up processes and includes an element of foresight thinking.

Research and Study Skills

This module is designed to introduce you to issues which relate to research and study beyond undergraduate level.

You explore issues such as information skills, qualitative and quantitative research, creating appropriate reference material, referencing and avoiding academic misconduct. In addition, you are introduced to the notion of ethical research and given the opportunity to further your career skills.

Research Project (Advanced Practice)

Risk Management in Projects

We provide you with an advanced level of study in risk management in projects. You explore a range of tools and techniques used in risk identification, qualitative and quantitative risk analysis, risk-planning responses, PERT and risk monitoring. You learn about financial risk, project-appraisal methods and the application of a decision tree within a project.

You gain awareness of probability theory that represents the corner stone of risk management. Invited speakers from the industry give an overview of risk management in different projects; for example IT, finance, construction, and oil and gas. You work in groups on project case studies which apply risk management theory. In addition, you gain hands-on experience in applying the @RISK© tool to a variety of scenarios of risk factors. You develop a deep understanding of the systematic process of risk management and application of @RISK© software.

Managing Change

This module develops your critical understanding of change management and the role of the change manager.

Key and relevant concepts, thinking and theories are integrated along with how managers manage in the context of change.

We also address the emergence of managers as leaders of change.

Managing Projects with PRINCE2®

This module allows you to work on a real/simulated project in an industry like context. You synthesize your previous knowledge and apply it to real life problems for typical client(s). The module emphasises key areas such as project management, client consultancy and teamwork.

The project management side focuses on the structure, processes and terminology of the PRINCE2® methodology allow you to apply and tailor PRINCE2® to address the needs and problems of the client(s).

You are assessed by two equally weighted components requiring working both individually and in groups.

 

Advanced Practice options

Research Internship

Develop your research and academic skills by undertaking a research internship within the University. Experience working as part of a research team in an academic setting – ideal if you are interested in a career in research or academia.

Study Abroad

Take part in an academic exchange with one of our partner universities and experience study, student life and culture in a different environment. This option offers a valuable life experience and enhances your ability to adapt to working and living internationally. This option does incur additional costs such as travel and accommodation. You must also take responsibility for ensuring you have the appropriate visa to study outside the UK, where relevant.

Vocational Internship

Spend one semester working full-time in industry. We have close links with a variety of local companies who can offer you the chance to develop your knowledge and professional skills in the workplace through an internship. Although we can’t guarantee you an internship, we will provide you with practical support and advice on how to find and secure your own internship position. A vocational internship is a great way to gain work experience and give your CV a competitive edge.

How you learn

The course is delivered using a series of lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions. Project modelling and case studies are a key feature in your learning. We invite project managers from organisations from diverse engineering sectors (for example, manufacturing, process, oil and gas, construction, telecoms, IT, finance) as industry speakers on the course.

In addition to the taught sessions, you undertake a substantive MSc research project and the Advanced Practice module. This module enables you to experience and develop employability or research attributes and experiential learning opportunities in either an external workplace, internal research environment or by studying abroad. You also critically engage with either external stakeholders or internal academic staff, and reflect on your own personal development through your Advanced Practice experience.

How you are assessed

Assessment varies from module to module. The assessment methodology could include in-course assignments, presentations and/or formal examinations.

Your Advanced Practice module is assessed by an individual written reflective report (3,000 words) together with a study or workplace log, where appropriate, and through a poster presentation.

Career opportunities

As a project manager, your skills will be in demand by companies and organisations worldwide. The most common industries include engineering, process and oil and gas, construction, manufacturing, digital, IT and telecoms. Average salaries are around £52,000. Experienced and high-profile project managers can earn upwards of £60,000 a year or around £600 a day for shorter projects or freelance work.

Entry requirements

You are normally expected to have at least a lower second class (2.2) UK honours degree (or equivalent) qualification. We accept a range of degree subjects including applied science, technology, engineering, mathematics, business and management.

Non-UK students must also meet the University's minimum English language requirements.
