  • UCAS code: W214 BA/GA
  • Typical offer: 220-260 tariff points

Please note: this course is for 2010 entry only.

This broad-based course is for you if you want to become a multi-skilled and resourceful graphic innovator who can produce work for exhibition and display in a variety of contexts. You'll combine a creative approach to originating and investigating ideas with an informed understanding of the breadth of graphic arts practice across both traditional and digital platforms. Expect to work with a range of graphic media to produce adventurous work in fields such as installation, projection, digital sculpture and book arts.

What you study

In Year 1 you focus on a wide range of graphic skills and study key software applications. In Year 2 you develop a distinctive body of work in your chosen area of practice through your selection of project briefs. You plan and develop professional and management skills and develop key software applications further in the context of production processes. In Year 3 you negotiate topics of your own choice for the final major project and dissertation, and you are given opportunities to work on live projects and competition briefs.

How you learn

The practice-based elements of all our art and design courses are taught in a studio environment, supported by a full range of digital resources and workshop facilities. This provides real hands-on experience using equipment and processes which are up to date. In addition to this, independent and student-centred learning are encouraged. Theoretical work is primarily delivered by illustrated lectures and seminars where there is opportunity for collective discussion. In addition to a full-time core team of staff with professional experience, visiting lecturers make important contributions to the delivery of the course.

How you are assessed

The work produced is the work assessed; there are no separate written examinations. The process of assessment is undertaken against carefully-defined criteria and often involves a critique of project-based assignments. This process is widely used in the design field and allows for both staff and peer group appraisal.

Professional development

You are encouraged to undertake work experience during your time on the course.

Career opportunities

You can create your own opportunities as a self-employed artist and innovator, or consider postgraduate study or community arts, arts administration, art education and gallery work.

Entry requirements

A typical offer will be between 220-260 tariff points from at least two A levels or equivalent – one must be in an appropriate discipline. Considerable importance is also attached to your portfolio of work.
