The North, England’s ‘other’, a frontier region, a caricature of working class society and culture, is the subject of this module. We explore depictions of the North of England in film, literature and television during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In depth study of northern writers and adaptations of books into film and TV help us to explore how the north has been shaped in the nation’s imagination.
