This module explores the history and development of systems of control and policing society. It covers several key areas including the history and development of systems of social control, eg the shift from brutal punishment and torture to punishment that is seen as less brutal. You will also discuss the history and development of policing throughout the 19th and 20th centuries including the public police, private policing and community policing. Finally this module deals with the changing concerns about crime, anti-social behaviour and terrorism, examining the evolving control systems.
