Everyday images and knowledge about the causes and nature of crime and criminality rely on popular cultural and media representations, official and political reactions to the ‘crime problem.’ In this module you will critically explore attempts to debate these propositions, question their reliability and how they generate unproblematic notions of normalcy and deviance. You will explore the dilemma of freedom versus control, in which understandings and responses to order, criminality and crime indicate the nature and forms of contemporary society and modernity.
