This module brings a multidisciplinary approach to the transformation of governance seen in the UK over the last 30 years. Its aim initially is to contextualise these changes, with an exploration of events from the fall of the Berlin Wall, through to 9/11 and the present decade. The module then considers the effect of these global changes on changing forms of UK governance and policy, from Thatcherism through to New Labour. In the second half of the module you begin to consider how these macro and national-level changes have affected the criminal justice system, with debates around antisocial behaviour and the control of youth. We also look at ways in which waves of marketisation and managerialism have affected criminal justice agencies. Finally, the module focuses on the transformation of social policy, looking at the ‘inclusion’ agenda, pro-work policies, the learning society and multiculturalism.
