Year 1 core modules
Year 2 core modules
Final-year core modules
Modules offered may vary.
You study the processes and components that make up life at the molecular level, in areas ranging from clinical disease, health and nutrition to a more refined appreciation of the very processes of life itself. You undertake a review of the fundamentals of chemistry, including atomic structure, oxidation and reduction, bonding and intramolecular forces, especially with respect to water. This learning is developed by a study of the chemistry of carbon, especially with respect to biological chemistry.
You take a detailed look at important groups of biological molecules, including protein, lipids, and carbohydrates, and you consider important separation methods, such as chromatography and electrophoresis.
The module is delivered through lectures and tutorials, and is assessed by examination (50%). You are also assessed on your ability to plan and implement a series of experiments as part of a small team, analysing and interpreting your laboratory data (50%)
