In this module you investigate the relationships between IT and people from different view points, for example, users, developers, organisations and society.
We look at case studies of people interacting with information and communication technologies, and explain the techniques that can be used to investigate IT and people.
We use academic research papers to provide theoretical frameworks to help you understand and critically analyse the relationships between IT and people, and the implications for those working in the computing industry.
This module aims to:
- enable you to study the relationships between IT and people using a number of different perspectives and theoretical frameworks
- provide you with appropriate data generation methods and analytical skills, to investigate the relationships between IT and people
- provide you with an understanding of people oriented issues and ethical concerns you may encounter when working in the computing industry
- give you the ability to reflect upon and discuss current and emerging issues concerning the relationships between IT and people.
Some topics we address in traditional lectures and seminars. In lectures we introduce topics and provide overviews, and then provide links to, and encouragement of, further investigation and reading. Lectures are supported by seminars where case study material and research papers are analysed and discussed, and feedback given.
These seminars should be largely student led and will involve individual and group work. Other topics are explored in independent study and study group investigations, supported by the tutor.
Outside class time you are expected to read published papers and research, individually and in groups, into aspects of people interacting with ICT.
Assessment
The module is assessed by an exam. Exam questions encourage you to explain, apply and critically evaluate current and emerging theories about the relationships between people and computer–based systems.
