This module introduces basic analysis and design concepts and procedures used in structural design. It provides you with the basic analysis and design knowledge required to carry out the design of common structural elements to the appropriate National and European Standards in structural design. Case study examples are used to gain the skills and understanding required to develop effective and economic designs.
Lectures introduce you to the core material. Tutorial sessions provide individual student support, to allow you to practice your knowledge of the topics and be provided with formative feedback. You work individually, however some group work may be used in classroom situations.
Emphasis is placed on manual analysis techniques to determine the values required for the subsequent design procedures. The designs of the structural elements will fully comply with the appropriate current standards. You will have access to extracts from the appropriate design standards.
The module is assessed by one in-course assessment and an end examination, concerning the design calculations of structural elements.
