About the School

The School of Design, Culture & the Arts is a diverse and enterprising group, spanning practice-led subjects like art and design, dance, acting and TV production as well as English studies, history and media studies.

We are committed to providing you with the very best educational experience in a supportive environment.

What we offer

We incorporate field trips, live projects and competitions into the curriculum, where possible, to extend your knowledge and understanding of your subject. The School has an excellent reputation in a number of areas.

The School staff were entered in three Research Excellence Framework submissions in art and design, English and history. Academic staff remain committed to their research and practice and this informs their teaching, ensuring that their teaching retains an up-to-date vitality.

The North East Film Archive (NEFA)
Teesside University students have a great opportunity to access archive footage for research and media productions. You can view more than 100 titles on the NEFA website free of charge, search over 1,000 catalogue entries on the NEFA catalogue or call in and talk to the team about the collections.

mima, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, is part of Teesside University and art and design students now have the opportunity to be taught in the mima studio - one of the UK's leading galleries for modern and contemporary art and craft.

The School of Design, Culture & the Arts has recently established a good relationship with Suzhou College in China which will enable field trips to take place. Other Erasmus and study abroad opportunities are on offer and the School also recruits from a wide global intake so we are proud to have a truly international feel.
