- You will be taught by leading historians - 80% of history is in the top three grades for research quality in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise including 10% considered world-leading and 40% internationally excellent.
- The high quality of the history courses has been nationally recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency. They praised the ‘friendliness, helpfulness and open door accessibility of history staff’.
- Our courses give you an opportunity to study a broad choice of topics. Areas include late-medieval English history, early modern religious history, 19th century French history, modern German history, the history of Fascism and its opponents, 20th century international history, gender history, family and community history and the history of political thought.
Our external examiners have commended the range of teaching methods and assessments used in the courses. In addition to lectures and seminars, essays and examinations, you will take part in group-work presentations and projects. You are also encouraged to collect and use oral evidence and analyse feature and documentary film, as well as drawing on more conventional primary sources.- There is a flourishing postgraduate programme at both master's and doctoral level.
- In the Library, you will find a substantial collection of books and journals covering British, European and North American history as well as history-related software and the internet.
- You may also carry out research in the Northern Region Film and Television Archive, based on campus.
