Student broadcasters make most of one big opportunity

On Friday 20 April, a group of third year friends from clickteesside.com embarked on a journey down to London to feature on Radio 1 host Greg James’ ‘Feet Up Friday’ show. After a simple, humorous application online, they were on their way.

The team, which went by the name ‘Tees What?!’, consisted of Tom, Lucy, Jamie and Nicky; all of which are presenters in their own right on the student radio station at Teesside.

With a group fancy dress choice of hikers chosen, they arrived at Radio 1 for the big competition. The show was from 4.00pm – 7.00pm, and the team was to compete against two others, for a chance to present Radio 1 for half an hour.

Their fate was to be decided by the millions of listeners tuned in. The group had a short time to explain why they should be chosen and give a glimpse of their songs choices if they make it through. They sailed through the first challenge, and were put up against a team from East Yorkshire in the final.

A quiz created by Greg himself was to decide it, creating tense moments while the quiz took place, however the joint average intelligence of ‘Tees What?!’ prevailed and so the team got their air time on Radio 1.

For the four from Teesside University and their passion for radio, this opportunity was a dream come true. It was a surreal experience for all involved, as they got a glimpse in to an industry they aspire to be a part of.
