Northern Region Film & Television Archive

The Tyneside shipbuilding industry. From the 1986 Trade Films documentary NorthThe University houses the vast Northern Region Film & Television Archive, (NRFTA), that holds footage from the early 1900s to the present day. The unique collection of thousands of pieces of film captures the essence of the North East's cultural and social history in news, documentary and film.

The NRFTA’s moving image collections are available to support student projects and staff and student research.

The collections cover a broad spectrum, from performing arts, sport, regional tradition and culture, to business, industries past and present and education.

Film material informs historical, cultural and political studies but is also available to be used as the basis for creative work. The archive staff provide footage for presentations, debate and screenings across campus.

Students can also view film in the archive and select material with which to develop their own creative content. A volunteering scheme also provides opportunities to gain practical experience of film archive work.
