What brought you to Teesside University?

It was simple - Teesside University offered the course I wanted to do. I'd studied for my HND at University of Huddersfield and one of my lecturers there recommended Teesside.

What was studying at Teesside University like?

My time at Teesside University developed my skills and the qualification I achieved gave me the grounding I needed to be the successful business owner I am today.
During my studies I won a design award and gained a placement at ICC in Darwen, Blackburn. Without this and without achieving my degree qualification I would not have had the confidence, credibility or practical experience to start my own business.

I enjoyed the social life offered at Teesside and even met my wife in the Dicken’s Inn which is just next to the Middlesbrough campus.

What are you doing now?

I am founder and managing director of Hall-Fast Industrial Supplies, having started my company in my back bedroom in 2006. It now has over 15,000 customers in 95 countries and has won a succession of major business awards for growth, entrepreneurialism and exporting.

I also a governor of Vision West Nottinghamshire College and Vision Studio School, and I’m a figurehead ambassador for entrepreneurialism for the Mansfield and Ashfield area. I am passionate about giving back.

I was delighted to be recognised for services to business in the recent New Year’s Honours list.
