Showcasing the next generation of digital talent

ExpoTalent is our annual showcase of second year digital student talent from the School of Computing at Teesside University, providing businesses with a unique opportunity to talent spot and target students for placement opportunities and employment.

Last year we welcomed small to medium businesses from around the region alongside internal companies such as Cisco, Microsoft, Nissan and SkyBet to our event.

This year we are partnering with DigitalCity to celebrate, promote and develop digital talent in the Tees Valley, bringing student talent, young people and businesses together with a full day of talks and showcase events to coincide with National Apprenticeship Week and International Women’s Day.

Companies from across the region will be showcasing their work in the Campus Heart exhibition space. If you are interested in exhibiting, please email scm-enterprise@tees.ac.uk

Why is ExpoTalent good for your business?

  • Talent spot and recruit the best of our second year students in the areas of web, digital media, computing, animation and games.
  • Showcase your expertise and promote job and placement opportunities to Teesside’s digital students and young people from across the region.
  • Meet our academic experts who teach our students and discuss how a student placement would work for your business.
  • Meet like-minded businesses and those who have the experience of taking on our students and why they return year after year.
  • Find out about other opportunities and schemes available at Teesside University bringing our students and businesses together.
  • Find out more about the digital apprenticeship offers at Teesside University and the implications of the levy.
  • Share discussions about the challenges of attracting women to courses and careers in tech.

ExpoTalent also attracts young people from across the region to view the student exhibition of work and find out more about courses at Teesside University, as well as the opportunities offered by our exhibitors.

Simon Stobart, Dean of the School of Computing, said, 'I am proud to know that our graduates are equipped with leading edge knowledge and skills which provide them with a strong competitive advantage when entering the global job market. Our students understand the tremendous value that commercial experience brings and seek out placement and internship opportunities whenever possible.'

Our work experience programmes

  • A placement year is an opportunity for your company to address a specific project or series of projects that requires a fresh insight and extra pair of hands. It’s also an opportunity for your business to experience how a new graduate would work in your organisation.
  • An IT related internship over the summer can provide your business with short-term help, whilst enhancing the students’ career aspirations and strengthening links between industry and the School of Computing. Taking a placement student or an intern will enable your business to evaluate a potential future employee in a cost effective way. You will be able to influence the student’s workflow to suit your business needs and the students will bring a fresh perspective into your business.

Employer quotes

‘Luke has been such an integral part of the team that we will now struggle without his help. We have offered him freelance work as a result throughout his final year at University and have also offered him a position at Hammerhead for when he graduates.’
Sophie Smart, Assistant Producer, Hammerhead Interactive Ltd.

Student quotes

‘Thanks to ExpoTalent I was able to showcase my work to a number of potential employers, including my current employer. This exhibition helped me gain an interview, which further led to an exciting year-long placement at Thrive Marketing Ltd. I am now currently studying in my final year of BA (Hons) Web and Multimedia, whilst working part-time at Thrive, with a permanent junior developer job in place when I complete my course. I would strongly advise for anyone to take a placement opportunity as the knowledge I gained whilst working within the industry has helped improve my quality of work for my final year of studies.’
Tom Armstrong, BA (Hons) Web and Multimedia

‘ExpoTalent provided me with the opportunity to showcase a web application to visiting businesses. I was approached by the Head of Development at VisualSoft. He was very impressed by my work and the approach I had taken to solving the problem, as well as my PHP and databasing skills. I was offered a year-long placement on the spot, which was an absolute shock to me as he was the very first person I had spoken to that day!

I will always be incredibly grateful to ExpoTalent for the opportunities it has provided me, as fairly early on into my placement I was offered a part-time job during my final year at university based on my skills and work attitude alone. This meant that I could continue working for a company I love whilst finishing my degree, and that I had secured a job for when I graduate also.’
Lana Hedley, BA (Hons) Web and Multimedia
