Alex Crowton

About Alex Crowton

Alex has extensive experience in both film and television production having worked as a freelance camera operator and having provided lighting and sound operation for live events and broadcast. Alex has previously worked for BBC arts factual, BBC Films and Second Home Productions, and on commercial projects for Jaguar, Honda, and Hewlett Packard. 

Alex has worked extensively with young people in the criminal justice system and with marginalised groups; as a filmmaker and facilitator on a variety of projects including work with: 'Geese Theatre Company', ‘Cineclub’ (patroned by Lars Von Trier)  and Sonic DB: Music technology in Prisons; for which he received a Royal Television Society award for: ‘Change the Way/ One life to live”: Music video (2007) 

Alex won the Best Feature Film: The Sad & Beautiful World of Sparklehorse - Co-Produced & Directed by Alex Crowton and Bobby Dass (2016) at the 2017 Skyline Indie Film Festival.

Research interests and activities

Alex's research work largely focuses around the development of documentary Films and applied filmmaking projects that use film as a therapeutic tool within a variety of applications.  

His research interests include: the relationship between art and commerce, creativity and self-destructive behavior, the genealogy of the alternative American independent ‘lo fi’ music movement and the democratisation of independent filmmaking through emerging media and distribution technology.

Alex previously produced and directed a documentary about legendary music producer: Jack Nitzsche (2009) and is currently producing and directing a film about the life and music of Mark Linkous:  frontman of independent American alternative rock band: 'Sparklehorse'.

He has recently taken part in literary panels for 'Louder than War' with John Robb and Zoe Howe.

Alex holds an MA in Film Production Practice & Theory, and a Post Graduate Certificate in Professional and Higher education.  He is a member of MeCCSA and a  Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

PhD and research opportunities

Alex is currently writing a PHD proposal around his filmmaking practice, Film and music and the therapeutic application of filmmaking with marginalised groups.
